I once knew this man by the name of Lodante
He was respectful and strong, with only wise things to say
He liked being around people he but hated their ways
So alone and in thought, he spent most of his days
His family loved him, his friends, some cared too
And to some of those reading, he may seem just like you
But there was something about Dante that most had misread
They passed it off as odd. These voices in his head...
The day that Dante had learned to stand strong
Was the same day his best friendships went wrong
He was small for bein six, yet unnaturally powerful
But his feelings were sensitive, making him easily sorrowful
He would die for his friends, given any odd case
But that day they mocked him, called him 'gorilla' to his face
So Dante ran past his mother, and fled from the scene
Hidin behind his bed from those who were mean
He was hurt and confused, tears flowed like a stream
His head ached from the noise, the voices that screamed
The day that Dante learned respect and his place
Was the same day life hit him with a brick in the face
The night before he had argued with his dad
He said hateful things just because he was mad
His dad tried to reason, to get through to his kid
Dante yelled 'forget you! Wouldn't care if you were dead'
That morning he awoke to a call from his friend
The friend asked if he had heard, Dante hung up his end
He ran to the hospital where his mom cried in disarray
She sobbed 'Please sit down, D, your father just passed away'
Dante stumbled back as his legs began to fail
His vision went black as the dark voices wailed
A few years later Dante mustered courage to talk
He would apologize to his family for the hurt he had caused
He asked his mom n sis to sit and please hear him out
Then he stumbled through the subject he always cried about
He cried 'Im so sorry for the things that i said
I wanna tell dad its my fault, my fault that he's dead'
But before Dante finished, his mom got up to leave
He begged to stay and grabbed on to her sleeve
But she brushed him away and confirmed his guilt
He sank to his knees. He sobbed and he wilt
Dante dabbed at his tears with the edge of his shirt
He downed many pills as the voices sang of his hurt
Dante danced with the Devil to play off his hate
He killed a man once staring right into his face
He drew blood as a demon to earn the Devil's trust
He was nearly consumed by wrath and by lust
In the moment that he would've sold his soul
God saved him with a deal that was made long ago
Dante thanked God for his last minute intervention
But the voices in his head he neglected to mention
One day Dante learned to always think wise
But he learned at a cost, the cost of a life
He and his girl were kissin hard in his car
Passion turned physical in a room that wasn't far
They both lusted each other a little too much
Penetration with no condom, just bare to the touch
A few months later they made a decision
A decision that would forever haunt both their visions
Their nights had no rest and they always slept ill
The voices in their heads now included the baby they had killed
A few months later they stopped seeing each other
He was a scarred father and she a grieving mother
Awhile after he tried talk, to discuss their scars
But she wouldn't reply, the breakup was too hard
So he turned away rejected by her disdain
But the only things there were the voices of pain
Soon enough Dante learned to move on
But the voices always remained all night until dawn
Now things were different, he'd met another girl
This one was different and became his whole world
They were opposite forces and always disagreed
But at the end of the day each other they pleased
They spent every day together, always hand in hand
One day would be hell, the next would be grand
They persevered through annoyance and angry words
They both should've left but their love was not deterred
One night they sat having a verbal altercation
Tired of fighting, they were losing determination
Dante leaned forward to tenderly kiss her head
But she backed away bitter, returning a mean look instead
He hung his head low and offered to take her home
Then returned to his house where he now sat alone
Motionless he was, too sad to become vexed
He dreaded too much what was about to come next
So Dante opened the drawer and pulled out his .9
Stuck the barrel under his chin, and silenced the voices for all time...
I once knew this man by the name of Lodante
